Mercy
Mercy is a dedicated medic, the purest support character in the game. Her ultimate ability is a group revive capable of resurrecting her entire team, making her one of the most powerful characters in the game. She is however very fragile, and needs protection from her teammates to stay alive. If Mercy was the only female character in the game I would say this was a problem. The fragile medic woman is something of a trope in video games, however in my mind the other more independent characters balance this out.
She has a practical, even slightly cynical personality, and wears a clinical looking armoured suit. I like the design, the only criticism I can level is the breastplate of the suit. Anyone who knows about the construction of armour will tell you that moulded breast-shapes weaken the suit. There is no practical way to justify the design, so as with D.Va’s catsuit this is an aesthetic choice. I consider this a fairly minor offense, and it should be noted that Mercy is 37 and much like Ana represents a demographic that is not often included in games media.
Pharah
Pharah is an assault class equipped with a jet pack and rocket launcher. In the current state of the game she is considered one of the weaker heroes, suffering from a tweak to the cowboy McCree making him an effective counter. Her portrayal though is one of a capable and confident soldier.
Pharah’s main story element revolves around her relationship with her mother Ana. Ana was shot and assumed dead while Pharah was still young, and has only recently revealed herself. I think this is a cool story line and I’m interested to see how its developed.
I’m not a huge fan of Pharah’s visual design, I think the armour looks rather clunky. Also the design references ancient Egyptian themes, and as with her mother I feel that this constitutes a disregard for modern Egyptian culture.
Symmetra
Symmetra is a defensive builder character whose mechanics revolve around constructing small turrets and a teleporter which moves teammates around the battlefield. She is difficult to play well, but a good Symmetra player can win the game for their team.
I think the most interesting aspect of Symmetra’s background is that she is autistic. Very few games include well developed characters with acknowledged mental symptoms, but in Symmetra’s case it makes absolute sense. Symmetra is not disabled. She is fully capable of looking after herself and the autism is portrayed via her voice lines and taunts. These cosmetic additions show that she has an affinity, bordering on obsession with hierarchy and order. This also ties into her Indian heritage, with a cartoon produced by Blizzard heavily referencing the caste system.
I find it hard to say if Symmetra has been deliberately sexualised. Her costume is undoubtedly revealing, but not in a conventional way, and I think is on the same level as some traditions of Indian dress . It is clearly not a military costume, though this is justified at least in part by her civilian background.
Tracer
Lena Oxton, codename Tracer is a speedy harassment character who has been a poster-child for the game since its release. Like Symmetra she is a hard character to play well, but a good Tracer player will drive the enemy team crazy.
Tracer drew a lot of criticism about half a year ago when Blizzard released a screenshot of one of her victory poses. The pose revealed that her sports leggings have a severe butt-crack problem. Blizzard quickly removed the offending pose, but they have done nothing to change the in-game model. I think this is stupid, and the required change would be so small that Blizzard could easily do it if they wanted to.
As will hopefully become clear when I discuss Widowmaker, I have no problem with sexy characters in the game if the context is good. But Tracer is not portrayed as a sexual character, and I think that given the option she would choose a costume that did not ride up so much. This is probably my biggest issue with Blizzard’s portrayal of women, I think Blizzard really needs to sort this out and the fact that they haven’t is damning.
